Summary "The Alliance Genealogical Society (TAGS) is pleased to present the first volume of Post Office Records of Alliance, Ohio. This volume contains information transcribed from two fragile ledgers that came to TAGS from the archives of the late Harold Vogus. Mr. Vogus was for many years the curator of the Alliance Historical Society's Mabel Hartzell Museum, and he was also the founder and a charter member of TAGS. The original ledgers are in very poor condition and are housed in the TAGS library. ### The money order information comes from a ledger titled, Register of Advices Received, Post Office at Alliance, Ohio. Some recipients were individuals and some were businesses. Listings include the location from where the money order was sent. The period covered in the ledger is May 17, 1883 through August 31, 1888, and the listings have been separated by year and arranged alphabetically by the recipient. ### The information on envelopes sold, key deposits, box rentals, and dead letters comes from a ledger with the standardized title, Millers Indispensable Postmasters Record for Post Office at Alliance, April 1st 1893. Regarding box rentals, it should be noted that not all box numbers had names assigned to them. The list of dead letters shows the dates that the undeliverable letters were advertised. Two weeks later they were returned to the Dead Letter Office in Washington, D.C. With the exception of the listing of envelopes sold, the information has been alphabetized by name within each section. ### The Alliance Post Office was established December 31, 1851, with David G. Hester as the first Postmaster when the post office was in the village of Freedom before Alliance was formed. The Postmasters at the time that these ledgers were kept, and the dates of their appointments, were as follows: J. Kirk Allen, January 14, 1881; Harper Brosius, March 27, 1889; and John C. Devine, May 4, 1893. ### Maps and records show the Post Office in the I 880s and early I 890s located at 13 West Main Street, which later became 436 East Main Street. (This was on the north side of Main between Freedom and Linden. In the early days of Alliance, the dividing line for points east and west was Freedom Avenue.) At some point in the I 890s, the Post Office moved to 601 East Main Street, the southeast corner of Seneca Avenue and Main Street, where it remained for a number of years. ### Early postal service was much different than we know it today. There was no home delivery at the time period of these records; instead, citizens would call at the post office to retrieve their mail. ### TAGS members Carolyn Miller, Kayann Stockli, and Robyn Utt transcribed and proofread the information for this volume. Michelle Dillon and Carolyn Miller did the formatting and preliminary information. As with all transcriptions, there can be variations in the spelling of names due to clerical errors or difficulty interpreting the clerks handwriting. Readers are encouraged to check for variations."-- Preface
